FUOYE GETS A SUBSTANTIVE REGISTRAR

The administrative axe-head of a university is the registrar. In other words, the registrar is the person in charge of the day to day administration of the university, providing assistance to the vice chancellor on day-today administration of academic and administrative matters of the university.

The office of the registrar, Federal University Oye-Ekiti, since inception, had been filled in an acting capacity until May 4, 2015 when a substantive registrar was appointed. It was a keenly contested post, with many qualified candidates applying, from whom only one among the best would emerge.

When the dust settled, the best emerged. And who is this chosen one? He is none other than Daniel Abiodun Adeyemo, (DAA). As acting Registrar, Mr. Adeyemo had demonstrated that he was cut out for this job, a round peg in a round hole; a man with an acute mind and a sharp mental capacity who can think while standing.

An administrator par excellence, Mr. Adeyemo, until his appointment, rose through the ranks of administrative service and has proved that whether in acting or substantive capacity, he can deliver. After all, the two nomenclatures only represent the indices of administrative convenience as the job itself remains the same.

For the next five years, Mr. Adeyemo will continue to steer the administrative ship of the university, only this time with a different designation. The environment and the administrative circumstances will remain pretty the same, except that the appointment of a substantive registrar coincided with the institution of the University Governing Council which hitherto was non-existent.

Will this co-incidence change anything? Whatever changes one expects would be positive and geared towards achieving the overall goal of the university since the Registrar is the Secretary of the Governing Council thereby shouldering the responsibility of the Council in its oversight functions of local administrative issues of the university.

DAA, a former Geography tutor, a graduate of University of Ibadan, whose career in university

administration began at Federal University of Technology Akure, is a sturdy-looking, quick-stepped man with a square head that is full of wisdom and a capacity for sharp, incisive thought. Mr Adeyemo hails from Aramoko-Ekiti and while his modest upbringing sharpened his survival instinct, his determination to shake off the enervating shackles of poverty spurred him from one higher step to another in his chosen career until he reached this very peak.

We all desire to attain the peak of our various careers and professions in life. Only few actually achieve it – for the space tapers as the position rises. To attain the apex of one's career is an uncommon grace bestowed on man by God from above. We, therefore, thank God for Mr.

Adeyemo and wish him a memorable tenure as the pioneer Registrar of Federal University Oye-Ekiti. Oye Amo ri oo!

 


 

 

CONGREGATION REPS IN GOVERNING COUNCIL EMERGE

Recently, staff of Federal University Oye Ekiti trooped out to elect their representatives in the university governing council.

This was necessary following the appointment and inauguration of members of governing council for the 12 newly established universities by the immediate past government of President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GCFR. Contestants were: Prof. A.A. Aganga, Head Ikole campus and Director, Academic Planning, Dr. Adesola Satimehin University's SIWES Coordinator, Barr. Amaechi Eni, Legal Officer, Dr. Ken Egbo, Deputy Director, ICT, Mrs.B.O. Obabire acting Director Internal Audit, Mr. Patrick Ogunjobi, Coordinator CEDSS and Dr Mojisola Oyavure. Prior to the Election Day, contestants were seen all over

the campuses of the university with their supporters canvassing and soliciting for votes from members of the congregation. At the auditorium, the venue of the election, there was a unique approach adopted to prevent double voting. Before a staff could gain access to the auditorium, there was proper accreditation, he or she is presented with a ballot paper that qualified them to vote.

The voter identification number on each card was unique to the card holder to avoid double voting, just like every other election in Nigeria and the world at large. The election covered all the processes which included accreditation of voters, casting of votes and counting of results. Similarly, voting was guided by seven electoral officials nominated by the congregation to avoid manipulations and ensure smooth conduct of the exercise. The electoral body was chaired by Prof. Bakare. Meanwhile, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Isaac U. Asuzu, in his remarks before the election had reminded voters that the election was being held in an academic environment hence, the need for proper conduct. He further urged them to shun rigging and abide by the electoral rules. After the casting of ballots, the electoral committee counted the votes while the vice chancellor announced the results.

Number of voided votes was 28 while there was one valid proxy ballot. Prof. Aganga polled 258 votes while Mrs. Obabire got 173 votes.Prof.Aganga and Mrs Obabire therefore emerged as the Congregation representatives on the Governing Council.

Meanwhile, at the Senate meeting held on Wednesday May 29 2015, Prof. Olusegun Oladimeji, Prof. Sylvia Uzochukwu, Prof. Olugbenga O. Amu and Prof. Sola Atere also emerged at the election conducted to nominate Senate representatives on the Governing Council.

 


 

 

ASUU ELECTS NEW EXECUTIVE

Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) FUOYE chapter elected its maiden executive into office to administer the affairs of the union for the next two years. The election process which took place on the floor of the ASUU congress at FUOYE was presided over by chairman of a four-man electoral committee headed by Dr Adeyemi, Associate Professor and acting Head, Department of Demography and Social Statistics. Chairman, Ekiti State University (EKSU) chapter of ASUU, Prof Olu Olu, attended the congress as an observer and adviser. The congress had in attendance all categories of academic staff - professors, associate professors, senior lecturers, lecturers 1& 2, assistant lecturers and graduate assistants. Library staff and research officers were also present.

All members present participated in the election which took place on Monday, May 25, 2015.

At the end of the voting exercise, the following members emerged as members of the new executive: Dr Dosu Malomo, Chairman (Chemistry Department); Dr Ogunjimi, Vice Chairman (Department of Agric Economics and Extension); Dr Mrs Chinyelu Agwu, Secretary (Department of English and Literary Studies); Mr Chuka Okoli, Assistant Secretary (General Studies Unit); Dr Abiodun Lawal, Financial Secretary (Department of Psychology); Dr S. K Ojo, Treasurer (Department of Microbiology) Dr Apata, Investment Secretary (Department of Agric Economics and Extension), Dr Fajinmi, Welfare Officer (Department of Crop Science and Horticulture), Dr Loretta Ntoimo, Auditor (Department of Demography and Social Statistics).

Our investigation revealed that the new executive has since commenced work on urgent matters affecting academic staff welfare in FUOYE.

 


 

 

NASU PROMISES TO REVIEW MONTHLY DEDUCTIONS.

The Chairman, Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities (NASU) FUOYE Chapter, Engr. Dada Adebayo, has promised members of the union that the monthly dues deducted from their salaries would be looked into and corrected to be in uniformity with other neighbouring universities. This came on the heels of a general outcry from members of staff over the

recent deductions NASU made from their salary last month.

While answering questions from aggrieved members of staff during the Second Congress of the Union held on May 12, 2015, Engr. Adebayo explained that the deduction on consolidated salary as against basic salary arose after due consultations which the executive had with some other universities. The deductions he said were not unilateral but based on information derived from those consultations.

He also reiterated that the union in FUOYE was nascent and not inherited, and so implored members to give them the encouragement and support needed for the achievement of the union's goals. He furthermore implored members to always respond promptly to the congress' calls as it was the only avenue for members to voice their views on staff welfare and other matters pertaining to the union. He told them that the national body had also pledged their unflinching support to the local chapter, which was premised on the financial participation of the chapter.
