Department of Water Resources Management and Agro-meteorology

The Acting Co-ordinator of the department is Mr Adeyemo Adedayo Abiodun. The Department of Water Resources Management and Agro-meteorology is a combination of two areas of study and research. Water Resources Management in a non-professionals word is the management of a scarce resource - water, which has competing uses. The variation in the quality and quantity of water, and the several competing uses for this scarce resource call for its management. Agro-meteorology, on the other hand,is the application of the understanding of meteorology in solving agriculture-related problems. It is indeed a branch of Meteorology.
It involves the collection, analysis, and interpretation of climatological data for use in effective agricultural management. The two areas are multi-disciplinary as well. Many issues revolve around the availability and quality of water. One of such issues is the politics of access to waterways, especially where water forms natural boundaries between or among countries. Other issues here include the spread of diseases through contamination
and pollution atwater, ecological disaster through oil-spill and how these affect land and water, and even aquatic life.

Prof. A. A. Aganga
Head of Ikole Campus

Flooding in our unban areas is not left out of the myriad of issues that make case for the management of water. Women and children trek several kilometres to fetch water for domestic use; this also brings along the issue of gender and demographics into the management of water. Therefore, many experts in this field of study make input into solving societal problems.

Hydrologists, geographers, meteorologists, chemists, demographers, physiologists, ecologists, agriculturists, epidemiologist, GIS and remote sensing experts, toxicologists, government and non-governmental agencies brainstorm on issues bothering on water. Through training and provision of meteorological forecasts and warnings, the nation can avert imminent large-scale natural disasters; farmers can be advised on farming practices that will ensure the mitigation of losses from changes in weather conditions through agro meteorological extension services.

Graduates of this department can work as environmentalists, agro meteorology extensionists and consultants, meteorology officers in research organizations and even in the aviation sector. Some can be successful farmers, meteorology journalists, weather analysts/forecasters,teachers/lecturers and researchers and hydrologists. They can set up water and meteorology related NGOs.  Discipline, doggedness and versatility are essential for multi disciplinary courses because we view the environment holistically.

Students must be good at science courses like Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry. They will show understanding in computing too because modelling is involved and understanding of fluid mechanics in engineering is involved too, not forgetting the need to take agriculture courses seriously. Most of our students come into the department not knowing what the discipline is all about and having fears about many of the courses they take. We as their lecturers need to orient them on what Water Resources Management and Agro meteorology is about to alley their fear.
