ADDICTION RECOVERY IS POSSIBLE-UIDFN AND ISSAC http://fuoye.edu.ng/en/news/97-newsflash/609-addiction-recovery-is-possible-uidfn-and-issac

NAFDAC_FUOYE

Unified Initiative for a Drug Free Nigeria (UIDFN) in collaboration with the International Substance Abuse and Addiction Coalition (ISAAC) on 16 August, 2017 organised an interactive forum at Federal University Oye Ekiti, entitled          “Understanding Drug Abuse/Addiction Situation in Nigeria, the Sustainability and Best Practices in Addiction Recovery Support Programme.”

Speaking at the event, founder of ISSAC, Mr. Treflyn .L. Roberts enunciated on the dangers of drug abuse and its effects while maintaining that addiction recovery is possible because change is possible. He stated that change in any behavioural pattern starts with a process until an effect is noticed. Mr. Treflyn disclosed that the journey of change actually starts with a decision while action steps, continuity and maintenance are vital forces for effecting change in one’s behavior. He likened change to hair growth in the human body where the hair needs to grow and be maintained, else the visible changes that one aspires to see relapses.

He furthered talked on the three major dependency that needs to be broken in the process of change which include physical, psychological and social dependency. Physical dependency include breaking all addictions to unwanted habits while psychological dependency presupposes our brain telling us that we need to indulge in a frequent habit because we have programmed it to be so. Social dependency entailed indulgence in a habit because one wants to keep up with an already held social status.

Ekiti State Director of NAFDAC, Mr. Gonzuk .B. made a striking contrast between drug and drug abuse. He defined drug as any substance when taken modifies the hormonal function of the body of an animal or man while abuse of drug simply meant an intentional improper use of any drug for non-medical purposes.

He also identified likely traits that are associated with one who may be at risk of drug abuse which include; sudden behavioural changes like been noisy or extremely quiet, abrupt change of attitude, sudden decline in academic intelligence and criminal tendencies. Some of the commonly abused drugs were identified as Marijuana, Alcohol, cocaine and crack cocaine, sythentic drugs, crystal meth, methamphetamine, heroine and inhalants.

A major highlights of some of the short and long term effects on the abuse of drug include; loss of coordination, distortion of vision and hearing, sleep distortion, reddening of eyes, comprehension loss, nausea, muscle tension, depression, involuntary teeth clenching, convulsion, hallucination and  paranoid. The long term effects on an individual include psychotic symptoms like madness (mental derangement), lung and kidney infections and possible collapse, auditory and visionary defects, cardiovascular issues like increased heart rate, high blood pressure, damage to blood vessels in the brain and memory impairment.

He added that drugs are essentially poisons and the amount taken determines the effect. He also stated that youths are at a high risk of drug abuse because of their impressionable tendencies and experimental instincts. Thorough counselling and possible detoxification were some of the treatment prescription recommended for victims of drug abuse.

In a courtesy call to the vice chancellor, Prof. Kayode Soremekun commended the efforts of the oragnisers of the programme for the sensitization and fight against drug abuse and drug usage among youths especially as drug abuse has been perceived a global problem with its attendant negative effects. He stated that his administration is open to welcome more collaborations with the association for the general purpose of stemming drug abuse and illict drug use among Nigerian youths.

VC PARLEYS JOURNALISTS AHEAD OF MAIDEN CONVOCATION http://fuoye.edu.ng/en/news/97-newsflash/597-vc-parleys-journalists-ahead-of-maiden-convocation

DSC 7378
Ahead of the maiden edition of the convocation ceremony of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti, Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kayode Soremekun spoke to a team of journalists from Ekiti State Correspodence Chapel, on the level of preparedness and the major achievements of the university surrounding his one year tenure in office. Here are the excerpts of the parley;

Sir, can you let us in to the level of preparedness regarding the institution’s maiden convocation ceremony?

We have reached advanced stages in our level of preparation and this conference would serve as prelude to the major one coming up on 24 April, 2017. It is premised on sending teasers to the journalists as regards Fuoye’s maiden convocation. There would be a public lecture on salvaging the Nigerian Educational System presented by Director, Public Administration Studies of Nigeria, Professor Oladipo Ademolekun.

The university would also award various degrees to the two sets of graduates for the 2012/2013 and 2013/2014 academic year.

A stage play will be showcased by the renowned playwright, Professor. Rasaki .O. Bakare.

Award of honorary degrees to Mrs. Efunjoke Coker, the first indigenous principal of Queens’ College, Lagos. The second grammar school for Girls, in Nigeria.

Award of honorary degrees to two hundred educationists who contributed immensely to the development of education in Ekiti State. e g. Chief Daramola, astute teacher at Christ School, Ekiti State and Chief Akomolafe, pioneer principal of Ekiti Parapo College.

Could you kindly highlight major achievements of the university upon your assumption of office a year ago?

Uhmm, we have succeeded in creating three new additional Faculties and put in place nineteen new academic programmes. We also have enhanced infrastructures in the form of erecting new 500-seater lecture theatre and classrooms at Oye and Ikole campus. We have developed the curriculum for the establishment of the Faculty of Pharmacy. We have successfully matriculated 3410 students for the 2016/2017 academic session. Advanced efforts have been made to improve water and power supplies.

We have evolved collaboration between this young institution and the African Peace Network of the Social Science Research Council of New York. (APNSSRCN). This synergy would showcase the university in the global radar of scholarship, he said”.

The award of honorary degrees to personalities in their 90’s, is it a deliberate thing sir?

Not at all! I think we are poised to setting new moral standards for our society. We just want to remember and recognize these personalities for their immense contribution to education especially now that they are still alive rather than handing out honorary degrees to people just to elicit financial gratification from them.

FUOYE PLAYS HOSTS TO ANA, EKITI STATE CHAPTER

It was another day of book reading when Federal University Oye Ekiti recently played host to the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA), Ekiti State chapter on February 16, 2017 at the university auditorium. The Association inaugurated its first Ekiti chapter of ANA Executive Council members. The event was in honor of the former National President of ANA, Dr. Wale Okediran, who also served as the guest writer and reader for the occasion.

Dr. Okediran, a multiple award winning author, is also the founder of the Ebedi International Writers Residency and has so many books to his name, with some of his latest books, ‘’Tenants of the House’’ and keepers of the Tribe’’ emerging as co-winner of the 2012 Wole Soyinka African Literature Prize. During the course of his book reading, he urged all who were interested in the art of writing to write primarily to communicate and solve a need instead of just aspiring to win awards.

Former Executive Governor, Engr. Segun Oni, who was a dignitary at the event commended the guest writer’s works and affirmed that the greatest of all gifts God can bestow upon any man is the gift of creativity. He equally promised using his good office to evolve a viable writing workshop centre that students and other literary enthusiasts can key into to explore their innate creative writing abilities.

Senator Ayo Arise commended the Vice Chancellor’s frantic efforts towards expanding the carrying capacity of the institution especially in the new academic programmes introduced by his administration.

Chief host, Prof. Kayode Soremekun, expressed delight and applauded the Association for choosing FUOYE as her base for the convention. He equally spoke of universities cultivating what he called ‘the university idea’ which is now a total departure of what it used to be.

It was also an occasion of facility tour for the guests as the Vice Chancellor and his team led them around the various facilities and ongoing projects within the campus.

Other members in attendance were; Akogun Tai Oguntayo, State Coordinator, Dr. Olumide Ogunrotimi, State Scribe, Registrar, Mr. D.A. Adeyemo

Sowing Comes Before Reaping – FUOYE V.C http://fuoye.edu.ng/en/news/97-newsflash/534-sowing-comes-before-reaping-fuoye-v-c

The vice chancellor of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti, Professor Kayode Soremekun, has called on the citizens of Oye community to assist the university even as they expect benefits from the institution. Professor Soremekun was responding to speeches during a reception organized in his honour during the weekend at the Oye Civic Center.

According to the vice chancellor, in as much as the university is willing to consider the host community in admissions, employment opportunities and contract award, the citizens should equally strive to assist the young institution in surmounting its ever-increasing challenges so it can grow to give back to the host community.

The vice chancellor applauded the contributions of the Oye community to the university and said that his administration will ensure that Oye citizens enjoy all accruable benefits, hinting that the contract for the renovation of the block for the new faculty of Education was awarded to an Oye indigene.

He expressed appreciation for the reception saying, “I am overwhelmed by what I saw here today, this event is beyond my imagination, I thank you so very much.” He maintained that his administration is favorably disposed toward any community that will help to move FUOYE forward, and will, therefore, welcome any advice or contributions to that effect.

Speaking, the paramount ruler of Oye kingdom, the Oloye of Oye, Sir Michael Oluwole Ademolaju, said the occasion was a special one. “Today’s event is unique in that, for the first time since the establishment of the university, we are welcoming as the vice chancellor of FUOYE a man of our descent, a Yoruba man who understands our cultural particularities,” he said.

The Monarch commended Professor Soremekun for starting well, “Your approach to the administration of the university since your arrival so far reveal that you are actually conscious of the need for the uprightness and openness in serving one’s people; you have pursued the introduction of new faculties and departments with utmost sincerity of purpose.”

The traditional ruler climaxed his remarks by declaring Professor Soremekun a bona fide citizen of Oye and christening him “OMODELE” of Oye Kingdom, in fulfillment of his earlier promise of giving the vice chancellor the Oye city key. Oba Ademulaju prayed that Professor Soremekun’s name be written in an indelible mark in the history of the university at its developmental stage.

President of Oye Progressive Union (OPU), Hon. Barr. Akinbowale Omole had informed the vice chancellor that Oye people received the news of his appointment with joy in the hope that it would further strengthen the relationship between the university and her host community.

The OPU president applauded Professor Soremekun for starting on the right footing adding, “We want to note that you are taking off well, particularly in the areas of new faculties and departments which is the desired expansion. It is our wish that in no distant time the university will be able to compete with other top universities in the country and abroad.”

Barrister Omole also hinted that the occasion was not for any other purpose than to welcome the vice chancellor and create an opportunity for interaction between him and the community in order to foster good and lasting relationship now and beyond his tenure.

The vice chancellor was accompanied to the event by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Raphael Ajayi, the Head of Ikole campus, Professor Olugbenga Amu, management and other staff.
