Biotechnology is one of the departments in the faculty of science.
Biotechnology (sometimes shortened to bio-tech) is a field of applied biology that involves the use of living organisms and bioprocess in engineering, technology, medicine and other fields requiring bio-products. Biotechnology also utilizes these products for manufacturing purpose.
Modern use of similar term includes genetics engineering as well as cell tissue culture technologies. The concept encompasses a wide range of procedure for modifying living organisms according to human purpose.
The department boasts of a crop of top researchers in the field of biotechnology and related fields. Several of whom have won research oriented awards, scholarships, and grants both locally and internationally.
Biotechnology draws on the pure biological sciences are genetic, micro biology, animal cell culture, molecular biology, biochemistry, embryology, cell biology and in many instances, it also depend on knowledge and methods from outside the sphere of biology (chemical engineering, bioprocesses engineering, information technology, bio-robotics). Conversely, modern biological sciences (including even concepts such as molecular ecology) are intimately entwined and dependent on the method developed through biotechnology and what is commonly thought of as the life science industry.
The application of biotechnology are so broad , and the advantages so compelling that virtually every industry is using the technology, including plant and animal agriculture, pharmaceuticals, diagnostics, textiles, aquaculture, forestry, chemicals, household products, manufacturing environmental cleanup, food processing, forensics and in the production of biological weapons.
The department has a well equipped laboratory managed by seasoned professionals in their various area of specialization.
Associations governing the practices of Biotechnology internationally and in Nigeria includes institute of Biotechnology (USA) and Biotechnology Society of Nigeria.
