-          Minister charges Governing Council Members.


History was made on May 5 2015, at the main Auditorium of National University Commission, (NUC) Abuja, when the maiden Governing Council of Federal University Oye-Ekiti alongside other universities, polytechnics as well as that of National Library Board was inaugurated.


The special guest of honour at the ceremony was no less a personality than the Minister of Education, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, Executive Secretary NUC Professor Julius Okojie was the chief host.


Speaking at the ceremony, Mallam Shekarau congratulated the privileged members of the respective university and polytechnic governing councils, charging them to bring their wealth of experience to bear on their present assignment. He reminded them that their main responsibilities were to govern, grow and develop their respective institutions. To do this they should be conversant with extant laws, government policies and gazettes. They should not interfere with the management of their institutions but be concerned more with attracting more funding and infrastructure to enhance effective and result-oriented teaching and learning. 'Ensure that effective strategies are employed to maintain peace and progress in your institutions', he added.


On funding, they are to guarantee that funds allocated to their institutions are judiciously utilized, look forward to enlist support of individuals and NGOs to raise funds as well as establish endowments. They were also to address issues of streamlining educational programmes in their institutions in line with approved courses by government. Governing Council members must adopt the doctrines of transparency, probity and accountability in the appointment of officers in their institutions. They should also avoid activities that could disrupt teaching and learning while recognizing effective strategies that would be adopted to identify and eradicate vices in our educational institutions.


'See your appointment as call to national service. You must raise the standard of operation in your institutions.' the Honourable Minister concluded.


Thereafter, the Chairmen and members of Councils rose to receive their Letters of Appointment from the Hon. Minister.


Speaking earlier, the Executive Secretary of NUC, Professor Julius Okojie described the Governing Council members as men and women who have distinguished themselves in the public service. He therefore admonished them to go to their respective institutions of posting to strengthen their activities and perform the proper oversight functions.

The Vice Chancellor, Federal University Oye-Ekiti, Professor Isaac U. Asuzu was present to witness the ceremony. Acting Registrar Daniel Adeyemo and acting Bursar, Obadiah Dyiltu, were also present.
