Vice Chancellor, Federal University OyeEkiti, Prof. KayodeSoremekun and  Ex Director General, Abuja and Calabar Carnival, now, Dean, School of Post Graduate Studies, FUOYE, Prof. Rasaki Ojo Bakare have enjoined the presidency to give more support for the advancement of the nation’s cultural heritage for tourism in his efforts to diversify the economy.

They made the call recently, when the students of the University’s Department of Theatre & Media Arts, led by Professor RasakiOjoBakare, Ag. Dean, Faculty of Arts, Dr. BolanleOpoola and HOD of the department, Dr. Jonathan Mbachaga, presented the plaque award and cash prize of Five Hundred Thousand Naira(N500, 000), it received for emerging third best position at the prestigious African Drums Festivalcompetition.

According to the carnival icon, the ADF is perceived as one of the biggest percussionist contest which features most renowned and professional drummers across the African continent. The competition is classified into three groups; Foreign Countries, States in Nigeria and Individual groups. He also said that the world renowned literary icon, Professor Wole Soyinka presided over the competition while hinting the fact that FUOYE TEAM became the first ever invited school body to have participated in the competition. A feat, he corroborated, would go into the annals of history of the achievements of the young Institution.

Presenting the award and certificate of participation to the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Bakare expressed elation and surprise at the performance of the students adding that they were just at the competition to expose the students to professional practice and bridge the possible gap so as to enable them excel in their practice after graduation. In his words, “We were highly encouraged that out of 169 groups that came for the competition, we took the third position. I was the Chief Judge of the competition but when it was time for FUOYE’S performance, I opted out as one of the panelist but at the end, other judges unanimously agreed that our studentswere wonderful with their presentation.”He also disclosed that FUOYE recently hosted the prestigious International Conference of the Society of Nigerian Theatre Artists (SONTA) which according to him remained the best of SONTA in history.


Reacting, Vice Chancellor, Prof. KayodeSoremekun, expressed joy and satisfaction over the outstanding performance of the students in the department adding that the young varsity is going places and endearing herself to the International map of World Universities. He remarked that all hands must be on deck if the university desires to continue making its mark in various fields of human endeavor.A challenge, he corroborated would not be possible without the collective efforts and exertions of workforce designated at various responsibilities.

The don also opined that the recent achievement by the department was not an isolated phenomenon more so that the Mathematics department recently recorded landmark achievement at the National Mathematics competition held in Abuja. “In sports also, we are soaring high as one of our student has been invited to the World University Games in Italy. This means that apart from edifices springing up in the university environment, Individuals are also making a difference and if we continue like this, we would go behind the sky, he said”.

He finally reiterated his administration’s assurance to support more academic ventures especially those ones that would put the University on the global map.
