Fuoye Weekly Bulletin serves as the clearing house of general information. It disseminates official information within the university, community and foster cordial relationship between the university and the larger society. It produces official publications, which the students and the larger university community can use, through the placement of any information of interest to the university, or any other written contribution as may be determined by the nature of the publications. The unit strives to represent and project the best image of the university through protocol and corporate image management.
Havilah Donates Books Worth N5m to FUOYE.
Havilah Merchants Nigeria Limited, in rising to what it described as its corporate social responsibility, (CSR), has donated books worth over N5m to Federal University, Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), Ekiti State on Monday April 17th 2014 at the University Main Campus, Oye.
The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Isaac Asuzu, was represented by Dean, Faculty of Engineering, Prof. Christian Bolu. The Dean who welcomed the donor on behalf of the Vice Chancellor, who was away to Abuja on an official engagement, commended Havilah Merchants Nigeria Limited for their worthy and timely contribution to the development of the young university.
The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Havilah Merchants Nigeria Limited, Ogbeni ‘Lanre Adesuyi in his address thanked God for making the donation possible and offering him the opportunity not only to draw attention to the socio-economic significance of having a Federal University located inOye-Ekiti, but equally to underscore the appropriateness of a Yoruba adage that ‘’Agbajowo l’a fi n so’ya’’, ‘’ Unity is progress’’.
Ogbeni ‘Lanre Adesuyi said that Federal University, Oye-Ekiti had, since inception three years ago, made steady progress in infrastructural development and academic pursuit. He recalled that about a year ago, FUOYE in her quest for a rapid academic development had entrusted upon him the chairmanship of the University’s Fund Raising Committee for which he thanked God for the success he and members of his committee recorded in the discharge of the assignment. He however agreed that much more remained to be done.
At the end of his speech the MD/CEO, on behalf of Havilah Merchants Nigeria Limited, donated academic books and reference materials worth over N5m to FUOYE, stating that it was his modest contribution towards the rapid growth of academic programmes in the fledgling university. According to him, the concept of communal growth meant that every little contribution, even the widow’s mite, filled a vacuum in the hierarchy of needs. He therefore called for the singleness of purpose and the determination that characterised Nehemiah’s successful building project in the Bible; and avowed that only through these can the dream of making FUOYE a first-class university be achieved.
Havilah Merchants Nigeria Limited is a wholly indigenous firm which is in the forefront of ensuring that tertiary institutions, corporate establishments and MDAs get the best quality products and services in the booksprocurement, library shelving, library automation, provision of furniture, equipment and electronics database.
He stated that the company was determined to make indelible contributions to the University’s history of growth and success as they marched into greatness together in the years ahead, God willing.
Finally, he called on all concerned to rise to the clarion call of FUOYE in their bid to bequeath the legacy of Oxford or Harvard education to FUOYE when its history shall be revisited in a few years to come.
The University Librarian, Mr Michael Afolabi, in his response on receiving the books on behalf of the University thanked the donor for his kind and worthy gesture, promising that the books would go a long way in relieving the University’s book- related problems. Mr Afolabi maintained that a well- equipped library was a sine qua non for a good university which is captured in a popular parlance, ‘’show me your library, I will tell you the quality of your University’’.
In his closing remarks, Prof. Christian Bolu thanked the Havilah Chairman for the donation. He also revealed that a recent world universities ranking placed FUOYE at 10, 760 in the world, 209 in African, and 27 in Nigeria that made it number one among the 12 new universities in Nigeria. He hoped that the books would contribute immensely to further boosting the ranking of the university in future.
The event was graced by the Oloye of Oye-Ekiti, Oba Sir Michael Oluwole Ademolaju and his entourage, Principal Officers and some staff of the University, members of the press and some other dignitaries.

Chairman, FUOYE Staff Co-operative Society, Mr Borisade T.J, has unveiled welfare plans of the cooperative society for its members. The Chairman said the Cooperative, in collaboration with the University Health Centre, was building a befitting crèche. This project would be the Coop’s contribution to the welfare of nursing mothers and their toddlers. He said he was appalled to see infants dumped with unqualified care providers in unhealthy makeshift facilities called day-care centres. According to him, some practices that go on in such centres were far from commendable. In addition, it had become very necessary to provide working mothers with decent facilities for tending their kids and at the same time commit themselves to their work schedules, as many were beginning to find it increasingly difficult to pay the needed attention to both their babies and their work at the same time. The Chairman averred that the crèche would be commissioned and ready for use by the end of February this year.
These plans were made public while the chairman was speaking with some staff members from Information and Protocol Unit who paid a courtesy call on him at the Ikole campus of the university. Mr Borisade explained that the co-operative society was an autonomous body in the university which had far-reaching welfare plans that could benefit both members and non – members. He however regretted that the activity of the organization was not receiving enough publicity.
Furthermore, he disclosed that the Society had also successfully purchased and allocated over200 plots of land at Ayegbaju – Ekiti to its senior staff members, and another 100 plots at Imojo – Ekiti to its junior staff members. All these had been fully paid for; he said adding that there was another 100 plots at Oye-Ekiti. According to him, the traditional ruler ofIkole hadassured the co-operative of his assistance in their bid to acquire some portions of land there, to ensure probity in the land deal. The royal father, according to Borisade, had been very forth coming and supportive.In the area of loans, the cooperative was said to have given out over N12million to its interested members with January check-off. The society was looking forward to seeing a period in which its members would obtain an interest – free loan. He further disclosed that they also helped members acquire on credit such household items like electronics, DSTV, gas cylinders and cookers and related properties. Repayment for such items is to be spread for upward of twelve months.
The cooperative even has bigger dreams besides commissioning the crèche this month. The Chairman revealed that plans have reached advanced level to invest in a fifty- bedded hostel for the students; a gesture, he said, that would help in boosting the economy of the co-operative. According to him, the plan is actually to build and operate a 150-room hostel, all self-contained. The essence of these investments is to make the society so viable it can afford to give co-operators 300% of their contributions as loan, interest free.
He disclosed that the electoral committee of the society would be nominated at the next general meeting while their constitution would be made available at the same meeting.
Finally, he thanked all their members for their support so far and urged them to be patient as the executive was working tirelessly to make sure that it accomplished promises, and meet up with targets for the benefit of all.

The Vice Chancellor, Federal University Oye –Ekiti, Prof. Isaac U Asuzu, has stated that quality education and national development are achievable if only government, private agencies and individuals invest in education at all levels and thus join hands in the pursuit for quality education for all.
The Vice Chancellor made this assertion during the monthly university wide lecture held at the university Main Auditorium, Oye-Ekiti. He emphasised the need to motivate academics with a new vision of education in the areas of global networking, mobility and collaboration as well as internationalization, which leads to mobility of academies, students, and professionals, giving rise to universalization of curricula to enable them take the leadership required to respond to the nation’s challenges.
According to the Vice Chancellor, there is need for a change in learning methods from the old system of rote learning to that of critical thinking and judgement. Ways of handling issues must also not stick to convention so long as there are better and more innovative ways.
Prof. Asuzu, who mentioned poor quality of secondary education as one of the challenges to good academic standard in our tertiary institutions stated that there had not been any efficient system of getting the right calibre of students into our tertiary institutions, since Joint Admission and Matriculation Board(JAMB) seems to be overwhelmed by the number of candidates that seek admission each year. This challenge has therefore necessitated the Nigerian universities’ recourse to internal screening mechanism popularly referred to as Post UTME.
According to him, “To stem the issues of cultism and other social vices in our institutions of higher learning, management, and authorities concerned should insist on zero tolerance to such vices rather than subscribe to cultism as a means of protection”. He observed that students no longer take serious interest in their studies. Consequently, “management of Federal University, Oye – Ekiti will insist on zero tolerance to examination malpractice and cultism”, he concluded.

In line with its steady move towards ‘computerizing’ its examinations, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has organised a programme to sensitize students on how to write the Computer Based Test (CBT) both in Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME), and other examinations across the nation.
The sensitization programme took place at the Ikechukwu Iheanacho ICT Centre (IIIC) on February 13, 2014 at exactly 9:30 am with not less than one hundred students selected from various secondary schools across the Ekiti North senatorial district to participate in this programme. JAMB Assistant Director, Corporate Support Services, Ajiboye Maxwell, who anchored the programme, spoke on the importance of the exercise to the students and to the society.
According to him, the sensitization exercise was to make students accustomed to the practice of writing their examinations by the use of computer thereby eliminating phobias associated with such exams in real life situations. It was also intended to address some problems that have dogged JAMB-organised examinations. These include examination malpractices, loss of transcript during examination, withholding and late release of results, to mention only a few. The adoption of the CBT will eventually assist in enhancing ICT skills among the candidates, when the Paper Based Test (PBT) and its related problems would have been completely phased out.
Enumerating the comparative advantage of the CBT over the PBT, Mr. Ajiboye said that the computer would submit the answer script on behalf of the students, mark such scripts, record scores, and release results almost immediately. It would make the results of any examination conducted by JAMB to be ready within a week. According to him, the CBT allows for flexibility while the results will be on the internet for any candidate to check at any point in time.
The students were later assigned a computer each to demonstrate what they had been taught during the programme. JAMB moderator of the event adjudged their performance satisfactory.

The Federal University Oye Ekiti recently received life assurance claims from LASACO Assurance Plc, through VLT Insurance Brokers Limited, on behalf of its two deceased staff. The solemn ceremony took place on Wednesday February 19, 2014 at the Vice Chancellor’s conference room.
Presenting two cheques valued N19, 068,807 (Nineteen million and sixty eight thousand, eight hundred and seven naira)as death benefit to the families of late Prof. Adefioye Ajayi and late Miss Bankole Olayemi, Managing Director/CEO, VTL Insurance brokers, Mr Emmanuel Eneanya, commended the University for its foresight in taking up a Group Life Assurance Policy for the staff, saying that though no amount of money could bring the deceased back to life, the financial compensation was very important in supporting the families of the deceased.
He advised staff to take up this kind of policy, which he said would cater for beloved ones long after the breadwinner is gone. “Those who truly love their families can only take this kind of policy,” he said.
The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Isaac Asuzu, while receiving the cheques on behalf of deceased staff families, regretted the incidence of premature deaths among staff and prayed against such deaths in future. The respective cheques of N18,060,489 for late Prof. Adefioye Ajayi and N1,008,318 for late Miss Bankole Olayemi, were later signed for and collected by the Acting Bursar, Mr. Obadiah Dyiltu for onward transmission to the next of kin of deceased staff.
The VC also thanked managements of both VTL Insurance Brokers Limited and LASACO Assurance Plc for fulfilling their obligation to the university in paying out the claims. He used the occasion to emphasise on the importance of insurance as succour to families in the event of unforeseen circumstances.
Ag. Registrar, Mr Daniel Adeyemo, was full of appreciation for VLT Insurance Brokers Limited for discharging their obligation to their deceased clients. He said action has the added advantage of boosting the relationship between the insurance broker and the university. He however, advised them to ensure prompt payment of any such benefits to lessen the financial weight on concerned families.

It is an obvious fact that across Nigeria there is no tertiary institution without its own unique ways. FUOYE is not left out in allocating spaces and allowing community petty traders to establish what we call “mammy market” outside the school premises along Farm path with about thirty (30) stands occupied by not less than 100 persons.
At the mammy market, you can get different types of delicious food prepared under the best hygienic standards, and soft drinks. Other activities that take place at the mammy market include shoe making and repairs, hairdressing, photocopying and all kinds of internet services. In view of this, mammy market attracts a large number of farmers who sell their farm produce and other perishable goods to both staff and students at affordable rates. Perhaps, it equally serves as a relaxation centre for most staff that go there for their launch and also to discuss office matters in a more relaxed atmosphere. The mammy market also offers staff venue for social interaction where they vent the heat of work via gist’s and jokes as they enjoy their launch.Meanwhile, vendors in this arena provide succour in many more ways to both staff and students. For instance, they provide unsecured credit facilities to their patrons in the form of book-me-down aka ‘chop now, and pay later’. Such understanding is always binding on both parties and none is known to have broken this unwritten agreement. In fact, it solidifies the bond of loyalty between patrons and service providers. These are some of the parameters to measure the nature of relationship between the university community and the mammy market operators. And no doubt, you will agree with me that it is a cordial one. Based on these, both staff and students have their permanent customers who they run to, when there is lapse in their supplies.
At things go on, I believe, expansion of this mammy market is a matter of time. I even foresee it spreading beyond the present plot of land to hectares.
