FACULTY OF ENGINEERING WORK AND LEARN PROGRAMME
This process makes data transfers easy. The resource persons were drawn from the Nigerian Society of Engineers, (NSE) Lagos. They worked in consonance with Professor Chris, Bolu, Dean of Faculty of Engineering, FUOYE, lectures in the Mechatronic Engineering department and their students. The students engaged in the following rudiments of the exercise:
- Filter optic cable which is the fastest and most secure means of data transfer. It can also transmit data over the greatest distance. Filter optic cables are fragile to handle but expensive to install. Students were later divided into six groups of five each for a pratical session, with the lecturers supervising.
- Laying of the ICT cables was primarily done by the experts, (NSE people). The student engineers participated fully by carrying of tools, cables and other accessories relevant to the exercise. They fully kitted for the day, also were guided by the experts to be treasured.
The Dean, Faculty of Engineering, Professor Bolu Chris, is a seasoned Engineer. He is the only Professor of Mechatronics in the Sub-Saharan Africa today. Mechatronics is a design process that includes a combination of mechanical, electrical, control and computer engineering. Mechatronics is a multi-disciplinary field of engineering, that is to say, it rejects splitting engineering into separate disciplines. Originally, mechatronics just included the combination of mechanics and electronics, hence the word is a combination of mechanics and electronics; however, as technical systems have become more and more complex the word has been “updated” during recent years to include more technical areas.
In the cause of the practical session, our team of reporters had a chat with some of the trainee-engineers. Ifeoluwa Wole Iyanu, a 17 year old 200 level mechatronics student, a promising girl engineer in the midst of more boys.
Another 200 level Mechtronics engineering student, Oluniyi Kehinde, confided in our reporter that FUOYE was not actually on her mind while choosing a university, but had to pander to the wishes of her parents when they expressed their preference for FUOYE. Any misgivings she might have had about the young university are now a thing of the past as she is enjoying every minute of her sojourn here. In her words “FUOYE is now a blessing to me because of my beautiful experiences in behind both in theory and in practicals.
Coastal cable is widely used by the small servers, home appliances, DSTV cables. They are fragile and expensive but most secure if properly managed. Cabling is capital intensive and requires huge budget to accomplish. But the approach of the Faculty of Engineering in using direct labour to achieve Coastal Cable is widely used by the small servers, home appliances, DSTV cables. It is in this regard that the direct labour approach adopted by Prof. Bolu and his faculty is most appreciated. This approach reduced cost extensively as huge costs that would have been incurred had consultants and contractors been involved were drastically reduced. Another benefit of the do-it-yourself approach of the faculty is that it affordable the students hands-on learning experience. Furthermore, involvement of experts from NSE will to a large extent impact positively on accreditation process of the facility. The teacher –student interface provided ample question and answer platform which is a necessary ingredient for effective teaching-learning experience, a strategic approach in FUOYE.
