Brief From The Office of The Secretary, School of Postgraduate Studies
The Postgraduate School is the central coordinating body which has the responsibility for streamlining and harmonizing University Postgraduate Programmes. It handles the quality control and maintenance of excellence in Postgraduate training as well as research across the faculties in the University thereby developing an in-depth knowledge which serves as basis for independent intellectual work and problem-solving approach.
The University Senate at its 23rd Statutory Meeting held on Wednesday 24th June, 2015, considered the need for the establishment of the School of Postgraduate Studies. This decision led to the submission of proposals by the Deans and Head of Departments and the curricula for the Postgraduate Programmes in their various/respective Faculties and Departments.
The School of Postgraduate Studies took off in October, 2017 following the approval obtained from the National Universities Commission to commence full academic activities across five (5) Faculties and thirty (30) Academic Departments. However, the number of Faculties and Departments have increased over the years.
With the coming onboard of Professor Abayomi S. Fasina as Vice Chancellor in 2021, the postgraduate school has undergone tremendous improvement in its management and functionality. For instance, part of our enlargement strategies is the opening up of more departments in the university that have produced graduates to join the postgraduate studies.
Another strategy of our enlargement is the assurance of speedy completion of studies by our students. We have had Ph.D, M.Sc and PGD students graduating in record time. This has endeared our programmes to students from across the length and breath of this country. It is also evident in the 2023/2024 set of our admitted postgraduate students.
SPGS is currently hosted at the mini campus which is located in Oye town and the Faculties and Departments involved in postgraduate programmes are as tabulated below:
Postgraduate Diploma Programmes (Pgd) Are Also Available
The Chairman of the Board/Dean of the School of Postgraduate Studies coordinates the activities of the School. The Secretary oversees the administrative activities and ensures the effective running of the School.
Postgraduate Faculty representatives have the mandate of the School to coordinate Postgraduate Programmes in their respective Faculties.
Each of the Department running Postgraduate Programmes has a Coordinator that is saddled with the responsibilities of effectively coordinating Postgraduate activities in the various Academic Departments, synergizing with the Head of Department, Faculty Representative and the Students.
FUOYE has made considerable stride in postgraduate education in Nigeria. It was a huge success with the record of 206 postgraduate students that were presented during the 8th Convocation Ceremony. With the support of our Vice Chancellor, the School of Postgraduate Studies was able to double the number of graduands that were presented for 2022 and 2023 convocation ceremonies.
It can be concluded that at our present rate achievements, FUOYE would soon join the rank of the old Universities in training manpower for Universities, research institutions and policy makers at the national levels as well as the corporate organisations.
