Department of Physiology

Welcome to the Department of Physiology, where the science of human function forms the foundation for medical and health-related excellence. The Department is dedicated to advancing understanding of how cells, tissues, organs, and systems work together to sustain life. Through rigorous scientific training, laboratory investigation, and interdisciplinary collaboration, we prepare students to understand normal physiological processes and the mechanisms underlying disease. Our academic environment fosters critical thinking, research competence, and professional integrity in support of healthcare, biomedical innovation, and scientific advancement.

About the Programme

The programme in Physiology provides in-depth study of the functional mechanisms of the human body and other biological systems. Core areas include cellular physiology, neurophysiology, cardiovascular physiology, respiratory physiology, renal physiology, endocrine physiology, gastrointestinal physiology, and exercise physiology. Students examine how physiological systems maintain homeostasis and how dysfunction contributes to disease processes.

Teaching combines structured lectures, laboratory experiments, practical demonstrations, and research-based learning. Students gain hands-on experience in physiological measurement techniques, data analysis, and experimental design. Emphasis is placed on integrating theoretical knowledge with clinical relevance, preparing students for careers in healthcare, biomedical research, and related scientific fields.

Programme Philosophy

The programme is grounded in the principle that a strong understanding of normal physiological processes is essential for effective healthcare, biomedical innovation, and disease management. It promotes scientific rigour, ethical research conduct, and analytical precision. By integrating foundational science with applied investigation, the Department fosters inquiry-driven learning and evidence-based reasoning.

Students are encouraged to explore the dynamic relationship between structure and function, health and disease, and laboratory science and clinical application. The philosophy emphasises critical thinking, professionalism, and lifelong learning as essential attributes of future health and biomedical professionals.

Mission of the Department

To provide high-quality education and research training in physiology that advances scientific understanding of human function and supports excellence in healthcare, biomedical research, and professional practice.

Vision of the Department

To be a centre of excellence in physiology recognised for academic distinction, impactful research, and contributions to medical science and health innovation.
